After Encounter Report: Spank the Monkey 08-21-04 By: Efrain Vidal-Plaza aka Reservoir Dog On August 21st, 2004 the Ghostwalker’s Arrived at Wise Guy’s paintball field to take up paint against the Gorilla’s Paintball Team. Notes on the facility: Wise Guy’s is a very well run and user friendly Facility. Due to the Size of the Ghostwalker’s Team (13), the admission priced dropped from the Regular $20.00 to $15.00 per person. This price includes free refills all day on your Co2 tanks. Members of each team can bring their own paint. The scenario fields are well laid out and have plenty of cover areas. The layout adds to the enjoyment of the game as it makes for a fast game with plenty of movement options. There are two prominent forts from which all play is initiated. As it got dark the field was illuminated well enough for safety but there was plenty of cover of darkness to again make the game interesting. Notes on our opponents-Gorillas Paintball Team: Gorillas had 18 players make it to the game. Of the 18 there is a core group of about six, which are well equipped with flatline barrels, response triggers and other costly ad ons. This group obviously plays on a regular basis, as they were the ones who coordinated the attacks and tactics being used. The team is formidable the Gorillas employed good suppressive fire, to aid their (cannon fodder) troops in achieving mission goals. Over the course of the game, the Gorillas were ahead points wise most of the evening. Notes on the Ghostwalkers: Ghostwalkers had 13 members show up. Compared to some of the markers our opponents had we were not as well equipped. However we do have some flatline barrels in our mist, but no response triggers. Being new to the field of play we were not as aware of which tactics would work best even though we did walk the field prior to the game starting. Many of our members are ex-military so we did identify which avenues of approach we needed to watch and plan our tactics accordingly, although adjustments had to be made as we got to know our enemy better. We were behind in points most of the evening. I attribute this to several factors. First: difference in teams’ size-13 against 18. Second: Unfamiliarity with the field of play. Third: Lack of team building and tactics training on our part. I am a firm believer in that bigger & more expensive is not always better. So the fact that the Gorillas were better armed in my opinion doesn’t factor in. I mean look how long the Afghan rebels held off the Russians. Look at our troops in Vietnam. We just need to practice more. Who Won? Although most of the battles were won by the Gorillas, Ghostwalkers won the evening. Prior to the last game beginning we made a vow that we would not let this day be so one sided. We hunkered down, we worked out a strategy that we felt would work and we stuck to it. As the last battle progressed we also saw something that the Gorillas were doing that made us change our plan of attack. In the end shear determination and the knowledge that if we didn’t represent well this night, we would never hear the end of it in the yahoo groups made us determined to win. In this last battle we made up all the points we were behind the whole evening and made enough more to take the game. In Conclusion: Playing against the Gorillas will only make us a better team and them as well. There is a lot we can learn from each other and we should take advantage of that and the great facility at Wise Guy’s. Who knows one day we can go together to D-Day and represent the Dallas-Fort Worth area in style!
